Güllen, once a prosperous town, is now increasingly mired in debt and hopelessness. In this backwater, as if in a swamp, everything good has sunk - justice, honor, dignity, and even faith in people. What to expect tomorrow? It is not known... But one day a stunning millionaire beauty comes to Gullen and promises to restore prosperity to the city. The price of well-being is small - the life of one worthless person who once betrayed his beloved. But will the townspeople make a deal with the devil in the flesh? Hurry up to buy tickets for the performance to find out how the story of one small betrayal will end, which eventually plunged the whole city into an abyss of sin and hopelessness.

The story of Clara was written by the Swiss playwright F. Dürrenmatt more than 60 years ago, but its plot is relevant for all time. The book was filmed several times and became the basis of theatrical productions.

The premiere of the play "The Visit of the Old Lady" at the New Drama Theater of Moscow took place in 2016, and since then the performance of talented actors has invariably caused a storm of delight among the capital's audience. The production is played cynically, but at the same time amazingly funny - according to all the rules of a real tragicomedy.

I am very pleased This city has made me a whore, and I will make a brothel out of it. A few words about the play "The Visit of the Old Lady" at the Maly Theatre. Dürrenmatt has always been difficult to put on stage, well, he is a difficult uncle. In his dramaturgy it is a conglomeration of social psychology, futurology, demonology and much more, and therefore any director who undertakes such a thankless task should think a hundred times, and think more than once before cutting off. And just think how difficult it is to organically build on the stage the appearance of the Evil One in a small town and punishing all its inhabitants to one, casually taking possession of their souls. Woland, in my opinion, was more humane towards the inhabitants of Moscow than the demonic avatar of Clara. And when Clara said the main plot of the action: “This city made me a whore, and I will make a brothel out of it,” the residents of Gülen no longer understood that now the Abyss was looking into them. But Ilian Ronen, while working on this performance, thought well, but did not cut it either ... He began to create, which he was very successful at. The architecture of the performance always relies on certain points of support, it happens that the retinue plays the king, it happens the other way around, but here Ilian Ronen built everything in such a way that, on the one hand, the perfectly matched retinue seemed to play the queen, but on the other hand, the queen dominated everything . Clara, Lyudmila Titova literally shocked with the depth of the image of character and literally infernal elegance. And the retinue was to match ... The tragic Ill of Vasily Bochkarev, believing and not believing in the near black abyss. A conformist official played by Alexander Klyukvin, who absolutely synthetically played the transition from a friendly fellow countryman to a cold killer holding out a suicide tool of the brand Walter R-38. Vasily Dakhnenko, whom I didn’t even recognize at first in civilian clothes and who, despite his cassock, was very professional with a Mauser carbine, Maria Dunaevskaya is one in four persons, playing four roles at once and not repeating herself in any of them. Viktor Nizovoy, who literally melted into the role of a policeman (although for my taste, instead of a cap, he should have put a German police cap into his suit, to the Mausers and Walthers of extras, this would have been an organic addition). By the way, at the expense of Mauser carbines, the touch was very amused when the choristers singing a pitiful requiem for a murdered jaguar sing with guns on their belts. And very much in the theme were two-level scenery and, of course, a brilliant solution with a shadow theater integrated into the performance. About a living, almost Shakespearean forest, this is generally a delight. I also want to note the work of the Performance Artists Lily Ben-Nakhshon Aharon and Anat Sternshus Bedani. Magnificent costume and color scheme of the performance. Anatomical body armor Toby and Roby, it's just a delight. Well, the subtle psychological increase in yellow in the composition, which, starting from yellow shoes and ending with a completely yellow ensemble of costumes, shows the degree and gradation of the capture of souls by the demon of money-grubbing, this is generally highest class. And the finest organic choreographic flair, which brings unsurpassed plasticity to the performance, the excellent work of N.V. Tsibulskaya. In general, many thanks to the Theater and the Collective. In short, I recommend.

The performance takes place in the provincial town of Güllen, where life has recently fallen into decay, because for some reason all previously quite successful enterprises have now gone bankrupt. And here the residents of the city have hope for salvation thanks to the multibillionaire Clara Tsakhonassyan. And it seems that there is every reason for this, because Mrs. Tsakhonassyan is famous for her charity, and Güllen her native city. And Clara really agrees to help, but on the condition that the inhabitants of the city kill Alfred Ill. What is Alfred's fault? Why is Clara willing to pay such a high price for his death? It would seem a banal story... A long time ago, Alfred and Clara loved each other, Clara became pregnant and sued for paternity, but Alfred found two false witnesses and managed to get out, and Clara was forced to leave the city and engage in prostitution. And now she demands vengeance by the right of strength, by right big money. She has already punished false witnesses, who have become two of her faithful servants, and even the judge serves as her butler. Only the main culprit remained unpunished - the former lover Alfred Ill ... Will the inhabitants of enlightened Europe decide to kill? On one bowl - the material well-being of the whole city, on the other - the life of old Alfred ... Clara is ready to wait until the thirst for free money defeats moral principles ... Unfortunately, the miracle did not happen and the ending of the story is also banal. Residents of the city, under the guise of restoring justice, decide on a collective murder...

And this seemingly banal story hooked me to the quick. Perhaps because I myself come from such a Güllen, and perhaps because the action of the play takes place in such a way that you, willy-nilly, feel involved in the choice of the inhabitants of Güllen, and this becomes scary and creepy ... Because, by and large, each of we often have to choose between a clear conscience and material values. And often outweighs the second ... After all, your own shirt is closer to the body ...

As for the acting, first of all I was shocked by the work of Ekaterina Demidova. Seeing how her Clara from a blooming lady in the prime of life turns into an old woman after her goal is achieved, and realizing that this goal was to take revenge former lover, whom she still, paradoxically, still loves, I had tears in my eyes ...
Her Clara turned out to be truly alive and you perceive her pain as your own.
