What is the first thing a child is taught when he comes to school? Of course, the alphabet, and then reading and writing. Any teaching of a foreign language begins with the same. Is it possible to speak English without mastering the literacy? Yes, if you completely immerse yourself in the language environment. But even under such ideal conditions as living in an English-speaking country, you will still feel like a child in the company of adults. Without a decent knowledge of English, it is not easy not only to live in an English-speaking country, but also to travel the world. Even the airport is much easier to navigate for those who know how to read English.

So, it is clear that in order to master the language, you will definitely need to learn how to read. Any foreign course is built in such a way that in the first lessons you learn the alphabet and pronunciation. At the initial stages, of course, you will need to make an effort to remember how certain letters and letter combinations are read. But having mastered English literacy in the first lessons, you can easily voice any text, even filled with unfamiliar words.

How to learn to read English correctly. Some Tips

Learn to read in Englishcan be different. Someone resorts to the help of transcription. Others write down the pronunciation of English words using Russian letters. There are people who like to read aloud a lot. And someone focuses on audio files. In fact, all methods are good in their own way. When learning to read, it is not enough to learn letters, diphthongs and remember all the rules. In this matter, constant practice is important. Here are some tips to help you develop your skillsreading in english:

  • Learn to listen to English speech. Oddly enough, but the ability to hear what the British and Americans say directly affects our ability to read. At the initial stage, adapted books are very useful, provided with discs with audio recordings of the texts themselves. Having before your eyes the text that the announcer reads, you learn to read correctly on a subconscious level.
  • Try to read every day. Make it a rule to read English books for at least 20-30 minutes every day. Choose books according to your level of language proficiency. At the initial stage, you can read fairy tales and short stories. And in order to develop spoken language skills, it is also useful to occasionally look at English-language periodicals and blogs.
  • Get used to writing in English. As you know, reading and writing are directly related. One follows from the other. If a personreads in englishat a decent level, then he will most likely state his thought on paper very competently. Getting to know native speakers is one of the most affordable and effective ways to improve your reading and writing skills. Communication in modern society is often based on correspondence in chats and social networks. Therefore, having met a native speaker, you yourself will not notice how correspondence in English will become part of everyday life. Introverts can be advised to keep a diary, which will be filled with entries in English.
  • Learn English tongue twisters and poems. For example: Whether the weather be fine, or whether the weather be not. Whether the weather be cold, or whether the weather be hot. We "ll weather the weather whether we like it or not (The weather will be good or the weather will not be good. The weather will be cold or the weather will be hot. We will withstand any weather, whether we like it or not). Tongue twisters help practice the pronunciation of complex sounds. Poems enrich vocabulary.
  • Practice your pronunciation. Spend time practicing those sounds that are unusual for Russian speakers. For example, the combination th is not given to every student the first time. And, of course, the easiest way to learn the correct pronunciation is to listen to the dialogues and monologues of native speakers. Modern TV series with English subtitles help to deliver the correct speech.

Reading in English. Alphabet

Suppose you wantlearn to read english from scratch. In this case, you will have to start from the very beginning, that is, from the alphabet, consisting of 26 letters.

English alphabet (alphabet)

There are 20 consonants and 6 vowels in English. Vowels include letters: A, E, I, O, U, Y.

In order to learn the alphabet faster, you can turn to children's songs. Bright cards with letters also help a lot.

There are a few letters in the English language that "behave" differently from the rest. So, almost all consonants in English make one sound. But X is an exception. This letter conveys two sounds at once. It is also worth paying attention to the last character in the English alphabet. The pronunciation of Z depends on whether we are dealing with the British or American version of the language. In the first case, the letter is read as, in the second - as.

Also, the pronunciation of the letter R is very different between Americans and British. In the UK, this is a long sound a. In the American alphabet - ar.

Transcription

Read in Englishit will be much easier if you learn transcription, which is a system of signs used to record sounds. Since this or that letter may sound differently depending on what signs surround it, it can be difficult for a foreigner to read some words correctly without transcription. However, recently many students refuse to memorize the symbols of English phonetics. Indeed, thanks to the Internet, today you can easily listen to how the right word is read.

How to readconsonants

Remember, how to read in englishconsonants, quite simply. The fact is that you can easily find analogues in Russian for many consonant sounds. For example, the English Mm is, in fact, the familiar M[Em]. And in the word lemon, the pronunciation of the consonant L is similar to the Russian L. Also, analogues in our language can be found with the consonants N, B, F, Z.

The pronunciation of the letter C depends on what characters it is adjacent to. If C is followed by the vowels I, E, Y, then it will be read as [s]. For example, in the word cinema (cinema). Before other vowels, C reads like [k]: come (come), camel (camel), cake (cake).

The consonants T and D in English are very similar to Russian T and D, only they are most often pronounced with a breath. But the letter Q will always be accompanied by a vowel U. The letter combination Qu is pronounced like. For example, in the word queen (queen). The consonant G before the vowels I, E, Y will be read as [j] -. For example, orange (orange), badge (icon). Before all other letters, G is pronounced like [g]: game (game), gale (storm).

Another letter unusual for the Russian language is Jj, which is always pronounced as. This consonant is very common in the names of representatives of English-speaking countries: Jack (Jack), James (James), Jane (Jane).

Vowels

Reading in English for beginnersusually complicating is not consonants, which are often read in the same way as they sound in the alphabet, but vowels. There are only 6 vowels in English, but the problem is that each of them, depending on the position in the word, can have several reading options. Much is determined by whether the letter is in stressed or unstressed position. For stressed vowels, there are 4 types of syllable in English:

  1. An open syllable is a syllable ending in a vowel or a consonant (with the exception of R) followed by a silent E. A stressed vowel in an open syllable is pronounced as it is pronounced in the alphabet. For example, plane (plane), placement (room), he (he).
  2. A closed syllable is a syllable that ends in one consonant (with the exception of r) or several consonants. The stressed vowel in such a syllable is transmitted in a short and clear sound. The vowel A is pronounced as the middle between e and a [æ]. For example, cat (cat). The letter O in stressed position in a closed syllable sounds like [ɒ] in the word dog (dog), E - like [e] (for example, ten - ten). The vowels Y and I in a closed syllable are pronounced like [i] (little - small, myth - myth). Finally, the stressed letter U will resemble a somewhat slurred short sound and [ʌ] (cut - cut).
  3. If a stressed vowel is followed by the consonant R alone or in combination with other consonants, then the vowels will be read as follows:
  • a [ɑː] - long Russian sound a - park (park)
  • o [ɔː] - lingering long Russian sound o - sport (sport)
  • e [ɜː] - resembles the Russian sound ё in the word "honey" - fern (fern)
  • y [ɜː] - byrd (bird)
  • i [ɜː] - first (first)
  • u [ɜː] - burn (burn)
  1. If the consonant R follows the stressed vowel in combination with any vowel, then the syllables are divided into diphthongs or triphthongs (complex sounds consisting of two or three letters pronounced as one). In this combination, the vowel A sounds like [ɛə]. For example, in the word fare (fare, fare). The vowel O in the fourth type of syllable will be pronounced as a long Russian sound O [ɔː]. An example here is the word more (more). The vowel E under stress is pronounced as something of a fusion between Russian I and A [ɪə], for example mere (only). Y and I with the fourth type of syllable are read as. For example, in the words fire (fire) and tire (tire). The letter U turns into a sound (during - during).

Learning to readconsonant diphthongs

At the initial stages of learning a foreign language, students will also need to find the answer to the question, how to read in englishdiphthongs. This term refers to combinations of two letters that give one sound.

Table of English diphthongs. Consonants

How to readvarious combinations of vowels?

If you are seriously wonderinghow to learn to read in english, you will also have to study diphthongs with vowels. Here is some of them:

  1. ai, ay, ei, ey - - aim (goal, task)
  2. ai - - air (air). Before consonant R
  3. ae - [ɪ:] - aegis (patronage, aegis)
  4. au - [o] - autumn (autumn)
  5. ea, ee - [ɪ:] - meal (food). Only if the vowel is not followed by an R
  6. ea, ee - [ɪə] - dear (dear). In position before R
  7. ie - [ɪ:] - field (field).
  8. oa - or - boat (boat)
  9. oi, oy - - enjoy (enjoy)
  10. oo or [u] or - moon (moon), book (book), poor (poor)
  11. ou - - ground (earth). In the middle of a word

Silent consonants

Those who reads in englishfor quite a long time, they rarely remember all the rules for pronouncing diphthongs. And even more so in the process of reading, not everyone pays attention to the fact that some consonants are dumb. But at the initial stage of learning, it is important to remember that the following letters are not read in English:

  • G and K before N at the beginning and end of a word. Foreign (foreign)
  • B and N after M. Autumn (autumn)
  • W before R. Wrong (wrong)
  • P before N and S. Psychology (psychology)

Learn to read English from scratchyou can do it yourself. Do not try to cover everything at once, learn the sounds gradually. After you learn a diphthong or a letter, do not forget to consolidate the result by performing special pronunciation exercises.

In fact, there are a lot of rules for reading in English and exceptions to them, we have considered only the main ones. True, it is not necessary to learn them all. As you memorize new words, memorize their pronunciation and spelling immediately. So you will not have an urgent need to master all the rules of reading.

Teaching preschoolers (and children in grades 1-2) to read is a topic that raises so many questions that I decided not to write about it in about preschoolers, but to separate it into a separate article. So, today about the most pressing issues of teaching reading in English.

Very often, parents, remembering how they once learned the language, ask this, almost classic, question:

But what about transcription?

First, transcription does not teach reading.. And I never taught. Those who have studied transcription, confess: when reading a text in English, do you imagine it written in transcription marks? Of course not. You don't need transcription to read.

Transcription helps you learn how to pronounce an unfamiliar word. Previously, almost the only way to find out when there was no teacher nearby was a paper dictionary. Therefore, when studying the rules of reading (in the fifth grade, by the way), they immediately took transcription marks so that children could use the dictionary at home. I repeat, not for reading, for using a dictionary! But now we have a lot of various resources at our disposal. There is also a textbook with an audio application, where new words, texts, songs, etc. are voiced; there is a computer, smartphone or tablet with voiced dictionaries, and in extreme cases, almost any online dictionary provides the opportunity to listen to a new word. Children look into the paper dictionary less and less. And that's okay. This is progress.

Secondly, transcription will only confuse a small child. It can be given starting in early adolescence. In the same fifth grade, it is quite possible, although now it is no longer necessary. And imagine, a preschooler or a first-grader, who has just recently learned the Russian alphabet, is studying the English alphabet - these are already two sign systems that he must keep in mind. And here some introduce a third sign system, which is needed to decipher the second. Does it really sound difficult? Now imagine how difficult it is for a child. No, a child with a good memory, of course, will master this. But why? Everything has its time.

Why is it impossible to sign words in Russian letters?

Sometimes I see that some parents and even (horror!) colleagues sign the child under the word as it is read in Russian letters. You can't do that. Never. Generally.

Firstly, Russian letters cannot convey English sounds. When writing words in Russian letters, you yourself spoil the child's pronunciation. Which, by the way, is formed most naturally in childhood.

Secondly, if the word is signed in Russian, what will the child do? That's right, he will read it. Do not remember how it is written in English, but read these same Russian letters. He will remember how the word sounds, but, having met this word in a new text, he most likely will not recognize it.

With preschoolers and younger students, learning to read begins with alphabet and sounds. And the main role is played not by the alphabet, but by the sounds. It is very easy to memorize the alphabet - it is enough to regularly turn on alphabetic songs to the child, which are on YouTube great multitude. But in order to start reading, the child must learn which letter of the alphabet makes which sound. To do this, the students and I (using card games, videos, TPR - about it) remember its sound for each letter of the alphabet and one or two words that begin with this sound. For example, when seeing the letter Bb, children immediately remember the ball - ball, and hence the sound /b/. At home, you can additionally listen to such phonics songs.

There are two ways to teach children to read. And the best effect will be if you use both methods at the same time.

Whole word method.

This method of teaching reading is offered by the authors of most children's textbooks. According to this method, new words are given as follows: picture + word. Children look in the textbook at pictures with words signed to them, listen, repeat after the announcer, play with cards. Typically, the teacher uses two sets of cards: picture cards and word cards. In special educational games with these cards, children remember which word fits which picture.

That is, the mechanism is this - the child does not parse the word into sounds, he correlates the visual image of the whole word with its sound (due to this, the method of whole words can be used in parallel with the study of the alphabet and sounds, without waiting until all the letters are learned). Then, seeing the studied word in the text, the child remembers how it sounds and can read it. This method is good because almost half of the words in English are exceptions that are not read according to the rules and there is simply no other way to learn these words how to remember.

Method of learning by phonics.

The whole word method alone is still not enough. In order for the child to read really well, it is better to reinforce the textbook with its method of whole words by learning to read according to the rules. To do this, phonics are used with kids from the age of 6 - these are aids where words are collected in groups, depending on which rule it is read. Listening and reading these groups of words, the child deduces reading patterns. For example, after listening, repeating after the speaker, and possibly beating the words cat-fat-mat-bat in games, most children themselves will be able to read the word sat and the like.

Usually, phoenixes are beautiful books with pictures, audio and sometimes a video application (of those that I like - Oxford Phonics World for preschoolers and Sounds Great for starters, both in 5 parts), there are also interactive programs (Starfall , Teach Your Monster to Read) and video courses (for example, the amazing course Hooked on Phonics). Some authors give phonics directly in the textbook, for example, there are phonics in the Family and Friends textbook, but they are stretched over several years (!) of study. In fact, one school year is enough to learn all the rules of reading for kids.

Gradually, when children learn how to put letters into words, you can begin to select simple books for 4-5-year-old carrier children, in which there is a huge picture and one small sentence on each page. In many of them, the vocabulary is simple and already 80 percent familiar to the students, but there is a sea of \u200b\u200bdelight from such books - still, read a whole book in English!

So, even from kindergarten, you can teach a child to read in a fun and interesting way, without discouraging him from learning a transcription that is incomprehensible to him, and instill a love of reading.

Any child sooner or later masters oral and written speech. When adults speak their native language nearby, problems with understanding the language, learning to read and write, as a rule, do not arise. The situation is slightly different with a foreign language that needs to be learned for one reason or another. Here you have to make much more effort and it does not hurt to know certain methodological techniques that will allow you to teach your child to read in English, for example, in the shortest possible time.

How to teach a child to read in English: step 1

You should start by learning the alphabet, as in Russian. First, we learn the names of the letters, then we introduce the child to the sounds that each letter can convey. The child should clearly form the concept of the “letter-sound” relationship, because some letters in English may not be pronounced at all the way they are written (for example, Ss [s] [z], Сс [s] [k], etc.) .

To teach or not to teach a child the image of sounds (that is, the transcription of the sound meaning of a letter) is up to you. Previously, in educational institutions this was given special importance, today in schools they completely do without it. If your child is able to learn quickly, if he is sensitive to the language and learning gives him pleasure, why not? You can teach him transcription pictures so he has an idea of what basic English sounds look like on paper. Knowledge of transcription will give the child the opportunity to independently figure out how to read a particular word, understand many tasks in English textbooks, which certainly contain information about sounds, and read words in dictionaries correctly.

www.kinderok.ru

But! Do not focus on this - this is just an additional nuance that the child does not need to know. He does not have to learn the correct pronunciation and reading of all sounds at once - it is quite enough to learn the most important transcriptions together (for example, the main vowels and consonants). He will come to understand the rest in time.

You can study letters with a child in the same way as the study of Russian letters took place - familiarization with their image in books, playing with cards, drawing them on paper, etc.

Children experience the biggest problems with those letters that outwardly resemble the letters of their native language (Р, Н, С, etc.). Since the children have only recently learned these Russian letters, it is rather difficult for them to psychologically readjust themselves again. Don't worry - calmness and repetition can easily solve this problem.

Sometimes children have difficulty reading the following combinations of letters: sh, th, kn. Here, too, do not rush - sooner or later the children will learn these subtleties and remember them, because each child masters this letter in his own way, at his own speed and according to his own system.

How to teach a child to read in English: step 2

www.bec-dnepr.com

The most important problem in teaching the reading of English words not only for children but also for adults is the discrepancy between the pronunciation of words with their visual image, with their spelling. At the same time, some quickly overcome this confusion, and some require quite a long time for this.

You should start with the simplest examples, with the shortest words, for example, Kate and cat, car and hare, spot, box, pot, dog, etc. So the process of learning to read in English is faster for children, because they learn according to the same system to read in Russian too - they learn from the simple, from the ability to put letters into words. Thus, the learning system will be clear to the child, have a certain logic, which will increase the speed of learning. Gradually, as in Russian, the child will move from easier words to reading more complex and longer ones.

It is important that you select the right books when selecting materials for your first reading lessons. Most of the textbook should be occupied by large colorful pictures. The number of words and exercises should be small so that the child does not overwork, otherwise his interest in learning will quickly disappear.

Over time, you will understand when the child will need to complicate the task - then it will be possible to increase the number of practical exercises. It is very important for parents to have patience - remember how long it took you to teach your child to read in Russian, how much time has passed since the child learned to put letters into syllables, and syllables into words.

How to teach a child to read in English: step 3

www.mamamoldova.com

So, when the child already feels quite free when reading simple short words, you can move on to training reading more complex ones. Each time, independently show the child how to read this or that compound word. The child must memorize the whole word.

An important role is played by the control of the child, the correctness of his reading, otherwise the incorrect memorization of the word and its subsequent pronunciation may firmly sit in the child's memory.

It is ideal to use audio materials to read words - now they are attached to almost all manuals for beginners. Invite the child to read with you or with the speaker on tape, let him imitate his speech. At first, he may be funny and uncomfortable, but over time he will start to get better. At the same time, you kill two birds with one stone - you teach him not only reading, but also the correct pronunciation. The same approach allows the child to learn to feel the intonation, the breakdown of the sentence into semantic segments.

english-pineapple.com

Here, as in all previous stages, regularity and systematic exercise, constant training and strict adult control play a huge role. The more exercise the better.

A very important point is to control the child's understanding of what he reads aloud. Each time after reading a segment of the text (sentence, paragraph, etc.), ask the child to retell this segment to you. The fact is that a person always learns and remembers much better what he understands. In addition, this way you teach the child to quickly master the information read, and not just mechanical reading of the text.

Try to avoid repeated reading of the same segment of the text, memorizing entire pieces by heart. This may help develop his memory, but will not improve his reading comprehension. Practice texts of different content each time - this contributes to the development of thinking skills in English.

www.fitness-family.ru

If you see that after reading the text the child does not understand anything at all, do not worry - this is quite natural and normal. Together with your child, take on the translation of each sentence. It is not at all necessary that this translation be literary, beautiful and accurate - let it be “clumsy” and illiterate from the point of view of the Russian language, but this will give the student a feel for the grammatical structure of the English language.

Each time before reading a new segment, remind the child to try to immediately understand the meaning of what he read. Over time, even the most difficult to learn children get used to this scheme of work and begin to understand the minimum meaning of the sentences.

Do not strive to increase the speed of reading in English in parallel with learning to read. The most important thing is to learn how to read words correctly from a grammatical and phonetic point of view.

Good speed will come with time, but if the child has a wrong pronunciation skill, it will be much more difficult to fix it, so it’s better to put it right away. In addition, the speed of reading in itself does not carry any importance, not only in English, but also in Russian.

Dear parents, remember - the child needs your help and love! Be calm and patient, do not rush things! Sooner or later, your child will learn to read correctly, and if he has the right motivation (whether it's a trip abroad for the summer holidays or just having a good time with mom or dad), he will quickly cope with any task!
